I thought that Michelle Yeoh a good female lead in "was Tiger, Hidden Dragon", more than Zhang Ziyi, the only Martial strong, but emotionally underdeveloped.
Another good film - though less tree - Asian chicks kick *** on the film of the year 2009 in Hong Kong "So Close" with Karen Kwok.

In Hollywood, I think you can not find a steep increase of Sigourney Weaver as Ellen Ripley in "Alien" series.
As for the anime, I think it's a series that many strong women - Sakura Taisen Sailor Moon, Gundam Wing, refers to name a few.
